Carros Antiguos

This week I went back to Medellin for the flower festival, La Feria de las Flores! I found a very cheap flight through Viva Colombia so I had to take the chance! Every year they have this huge social event that dates back to the 1950’s! It is a five-day festival with different types of parades and events in the streets of Medellin. People from all over the world travel to see the spectacle. I was extremely excited about this trip because I have been to Colombia many times but never have I witnessed this. It was amazing! I arrived August 2nd and met with my grandparents that are also visiting from the States. The airport, José Maria Córdova International Airport, is located in Rionegro, a city in the Antioquia department. My grandfather used to live there when he was little so we went to visit some long lost family. He wanted to surprise one of his cousins that he had not seen in many years. It was a very pleasant visit. They shed some tears and many hugs were given. We then went to see a farm that belongs to one of my aunts' family. The idea is for my grandparents to move back to Colombia and live at the farm. It was beautiful.

Natural spring water.

Their own Vegetable garden.

Already learning how to tend to the plants.

My favorite picture!

Uchuvas, Physalis peruviana, Goldenberries or Inca Berries: considered an exotic fruit and can be eaten raw or in juices. They are semi acid and sweet. They purify the blood, tone the optical nerve, treat cataracts as well as mouth and throat infections. They contain Flavonoids which makes them anti-parasitic.

On Saturday, my grandmother was calling me non stop at about 7:30am telling me we had to get a spot for the parade! Tickets are usually available for purchase to get seats on bleachers but they can be quite expensive so we decided to just head out early to grab a good spot along the street. My grandfather was very excited about this parade because he collects small antique cars back home. I really did not know what to expect. So many old cars! They were beautiful and they looked brand new right out of the factory. Some of the people in the cars wore the type of clothes that were worn in the year that the car came out. People from around the world enroll their cars to get showcased in the parade. Some are from nearby countries like Venezuela, Bolivia and more.

The parade was very well organized. There were many volunteers and police officers regulating the area but we are in Colombia so people still managed to get past the railings and close to the cars for pictures, including me. We got up close and personal to get great pictures! My grandmother is pretty intense so I guess it runs in the family. Pictures here, pictures there, pictures everywhere!
